Why is a meditation cushion necessary while practicing meditation?

Meditation is the science of controlling the emotions and thoughts of the mind. It involves large amounts of concentration, clarity of thought and focusing techniques. Meditation also includes different types of postures of the body, which can aid the thought control process. Amongst these postures, the half lotus and the full lotus positions are the ones that are most frequently used. This posture may look easy and aesthetic but in reality, it is a very difficult one to maintain for a long time. The position involves crossing and folding both the legs; the foot is rested on top of the opposing thigh facing outwards and slightly tilted upward. The upper body is held erect and the hands are folded and placed in the gap between the folded legs. This aesthetically beautiful posture resembles a lotus in full bloom. In this posture, there is tremendous strain on the entire lower body – thighs, ankles, foot, toes, outer part of the legs that rests on the floor, etc. Beginners cannot even place the foot on the opposing thighs, even if the manage it; they lose balance within a few seconds, experiencing excruciating pain all the time.

Getting the posture right can depend on the practitioner but using a meditation cushion can surely ease the pain and help in maintaining balance. The meditation cushion is a specially designed meditation aid that is shaped to cover the entire past of the body that is supposed to rest during this posture. The soft meditation cushion reduces the pressure on the resting parts and eases the pain. Meditation cushion also comes with an additional part that can be placed at the lower back portion, which can impart stability to the posture. The biggest advantage with the cushion is that the pain on the outer parts of the legs is greatly reduced. These parts no longer are pressed against the hard floor; they rest on the soft cushion. The back piece stabilizes the lotus position and the practitioner does not lose balance and bend sideways. These benefits can help practitioners to concentrate on the meditation process rather than thinking about the pain or worrying about losing their balance. Meditation experts say that it takes a minimum of 50 attempts before the lotus position is perfected by the practitioners. By using the meditation cushion, people can halve the number of attempts and perfect their position a lot faster.
