Meditation techniques involve numerous procedures, along with many different postures and poses. Each type of meditation method has its own set of postures and procedures. Apart from these, meditation techniques also include the use of many aids and props for the better execution of the process. These aids are called meditation supplies. These supplies can e broadly classified into two segments – Procedural aids and posture and comfort aids,

Procedural aids: These meditation supplies include all the items that are used as a part of the meditation procedure. These items are essential for the completion of the procedure. Some of these items are traditional and were used by the ancient practitioners. These items are accepted as procedural enhancers – their usage increases the efficiency and benefits of the meditation procedure. Each type of meditation technique has its own set of required items. Indian meditation techniques will need items like counting beads, incense sticks, meditation beads, malas, hand rests, etc. Oriental meditation techniques will need meditation stones, bells, trinkets, etc. All of these are traditional items and are a part of the procedure. This type of meditation supplies also includes instructional guides, audio CDs, video guides, etc. These are not traditional items but they help people in following the correct procedure. Why is a meditation cushion necessary while practicing meditation?

Meditation is the science of controlling the emotions and thoughts of the mind. It involves large amounts of concentration, clarity of thought and focusing techniques. Meditation also includes different types of postures of the body, which can aid the thought control process. Amongst these postures, the half lotus and the full lotus positions are the ones that are most frequently used. This posture may look easy and aesthetic but in reality, it is a very difficult one to maintain for a long time. The position involves crossing and folding both the legs; the foot is rested on top of the opposing thigh facing outwards and slightly tilted upward. The upper body is held erect and the hands are folded and placed in the gap between the folded legs. This aesthetically beautiful posture resembles a lotus in full bloom. In this posture, there is tremendous strain on the entire lower body – thighs, ankles, foot, toes, outer part of the legs that rests on the floor, etc. Beginners cannot even place the foot on the opposing thighs, even if the manage it; they lose balance within a few seconds, experiencing excruciating pain all the time.
